Books and Maps
The Athens Historical Society is proud to participate in the publication of unique works by both academic and non-academic authors, the publication of the society’s own papers via The Historian, and the presentation of the historic Papers of the Athens Historical Society, published by the earliest formations of the AHS. The society has also published and sold books important to recording Athens’ history, including, among others, Charlotte Thomas Marshall’s Historic Houses of Athens (1987, out of print); Gary Doster’s A Postcard History of Athens, Georgia (2002); and Charlotte Thomas Marshall’s Oconee Hill Cemetery, Volume I (2009).

Submit Your Research
The Athens Historian, published annually by the Athens (Georgia) Historical Society, invites public and local historians, teachers, scholars, students (including high school, undergraduate, and graduate students), and others to submit articles, essays, oral histories, and edited primary source materials on the history of Athens and the surrounding area. For the 2022 issue, we are particularly interested in papers related to slavery, labor, racial segregation, migration, civil and LGBTQ rights, social movements, new communities, and the music scene, all with a focus on Athens and the surrounding area (Clarke, Oconee, Madison, Jefferson, Oglethorpe, Elbert, Jackson).
The Athens Historian is a refereed publication. Not all submissions will be accepted for publication. Authors may be asked to make revisions.
Submissions to the Historian should be prepared in a recent version of Microsoft Word. They should ideally be between 1,200 and 1,500 words in length and may include 3-5 illustrations. Author is responsible for providing written permission to publish illustrations that are not public domain, as well as caption/credit for any illustrations. Please also provide citations for all sources. Manuscripts should be double-spaced and follow a consistent style.
Send one electronic copy of the manuscript and a cover letter to the editors. The cover letter should include the author’s name, mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number.
The editorial staff will begin reviewing submissions for the next issue of the journal on December 1. Articles submitted after December 1 will be held for a future issue.
