On a blustery Friday night in February of 1899, twenty Athenians gathered at the antebellum mansion of Augustus Longstreet Hull to form a group whose purpose was to preserve, record, and protect the history of our great city. This was the first meeting of what we now know as the Athens Historical Society.

The historical society hosts programs, events, and lectures to introduce members and general audiences to Athens’ cultural and geographical landscape. Our mission is to research, study, and disseminate knowledge of the rich history of the City of Athens, to serve as a resource of historical information, and to assist in the preservation of the City’s historical records.
