SUMMARY:From the Crescent Moon to the Classic City
DESCRIPTION:The Athens Historical Society is pleased to announce its collaboration with the May 7\, 2021 rededication of Athens’ “Moon Tree” located at 120 West Dougherty Street. This tree – a Loblolly Pine – was grown from a seed flown to the moon and back in February 1971. \n \nWhen Apollo 14 launched on January 31\, 1971 it carried\, among other things\, a packet of more than 400 tree seeds. These were stored in the personal kit of Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa\, who had been approached by the US Forest Service about carrying the seeds to space. Roosa agreed to participate\, and over the next nine days he and his cargo traveled nearly half a million miles from the Earth to the moon and back again. After the mission’s successful conclusion\, the seeds were analyzed by Forest Service stations to examine what effect\, if any\, spaceflight had imparted on them. After years of study\, surviving saplings were selected for national and international distribution through NASA’s “Moon Tree” program. \nIn 1976\, the Athens Sertoma Club lobbied for the city to become home to one of these trees\, and in May of that year they succeeded in planting a very well-traveled Loblolly Pine at what was then the site of the Athens-Clarke Country Library (today the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department). Now\, 50 years after the Apollo 14 mission\, Athens-Clarke County Landscape Management in partnership with the Athens Historical Society is recognizing our Moon Tree once again with an event held on May 7 – National Space Day. By showing what is possible when environmental science reaches for the stars\, these groups feel that the tree is a unique inspirational asset in our already exceptional city. \nThe event will begin at 10:00 AM after which Rosemary Roosa\, daughter of Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa\, will deliver virtual remarks at 12:00 Noon. To register for the virtual talk\, click here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAocOGqrDoqH9R7HICZf0bF2xTQQEStMCOO  \nQuestions about the event should be directed to AthensHistorical@gmail.com. \nThe Athens Historical Society is a nonprofit organization committed to the preservation of a collective history of the people of Athens\, Georgia. It is guided by the belief that an inclusive perspective of the past must uphold historical truths\, must encompass multiple voices\, and must not suppress uncomfortable information that helps explain why we are the way we are today. \n

SUMMARY:UGA New Media Institute Super SLAM Event
DESCRIPTION:As many of you know\, our website recently underwent a timely renovation. Helping us with this project were students enrolled in UGA’s New Media Institute\, which houses the University’s largest certificate program. According to their website\, the New Media Certificate is a credential that demonstrates that a student is “techknowledgable\,” that is\, that he or she understands new media technologies and their applications in a chosen field. The program culminates in New Media Capstone projects–a program under the direction of John Weatherford. As Weatherford explains\, students in his NMIX 4510 class work together\, calling “upon all of the skills gained throughout their certificate journey to develop\, design\, and debut [a project] for a client.” At the end of the semester\, the students participate in SLAM\, a (virtual) day of showcasing their projects and networking with industry guests and program alumni. \nFor the Fall 2020 semester\, one of the New Media Capstone projects was the redesign and renovation of the AHS website. The students are proud to have helped us build a more user-friendly and visually-pleasing website\, and they are happy to invite us to tune into the culmination of their project (as well as the other New Media Capstone projects) on Friday\, December 11th via Zoom. \nYou can RSVP here if you are interested in attending this event.

SUMMARY:AHS Fall Ramble: Historic Jefferson Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Our fall ramble will take place in Jefferson\, Georgia on Sunday\, October 28\, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.\n\nWe will begin with the Crawford W. Long Museum. Dr. Crawford W. Long first used ether for surgical anesthesia. Artifacts and documents highlighting the life of Dr. Long\, as well as early anesthesia equipment are displayed in the Medical Museum. Changing exhibits in the 1858 Pendergrass Store connected to the Museum offer visitors a unique view into the life of the 19th century.\n\nNext we will visit the Historic Jackson County Courthouse\, home of the Jefferson Historical Society and archives. Built in 1879\, this beautiful landmark served for 125 years until 2004\, when the new courthouse complex was built. Ten years later\, the “new”Jackson County Historic Courthouse opened\, serving as the Jackson County Welcome Center and Historic Archives. Our visit will include the second floor\, which is currently under renovation.\n\nTwo optional parts of the ramble follow: One is a tour of the nearby Woodbine Cemetery\, once site of the Jefferson Methodist Church (1806-1845). Many of the town’s founders are buried here as well as civil war veterans. The second is a tour of the Lawrenceville Street neighborhood\, an historic district that includes an African American cemetery.\n\nParticipants can walk (distances are short) or take cars\, and there will be places to sit at the Museum and courthouse. Each part of the tour will be about 45 minutes. You can sign up for a $10 dinner after the optional rambles at Cream ‘n Suga\, a local restaurant located in the old Jefferson jail.\nWe will meet and park at 1:00 p.m.at the Long Museum (28 College St\, Jefferson\, GA) and can walk or drive to the other locations of the tour from there. You might wish to carpool to Jefferson. Plan on a half an hour to get there from Athens.\n\nThis ramble will be limited to 30 participants. AHS members can bring one guest. Sign up by October 27 by emailing\nAthenshistorical@gmail.com. Tell how many will be in your party and specify if you wish to attend the dinner\, as we must preorder. We will email you any updated directions. AHS will make a contribution to the Jefferson Historical Society and the Crawford W. Long Museum in gratitude for their hospitality; participants in the tour may wish to contribute something.

SUMMARY:October Program - CSI: Dixie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October program CSI Dixie: The View from the American South’s County Coroner’s Offices\, 1800 – 1900\, as Dr. Stephen Berry provides a glimpse into Victorian-era coroner’s inquests\, some of richest records we have of life and death in the nineteenth century South. Using extant coroners’ inquests for the state of South Carolina between 1800 and 1900\, Dr. Berry will explore how race\, place\, gender\, profession\, behavior\, and good and bad luck played large roles in how our forebears exited this world. .\nStephen Berry\, author\, is Gregory Professor of the Civil War Era\, Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Historical Association\, and Co-Director\, with Claudio Saunt\, of the Center for Virtual History\, all at the University of Georgia. The author or editor of four books on the South in the Civil War Era\, he has always felt compelled to study “old\, unhappy\, far-off things.”\nSpecial thanks to our generour co-hosts Athens Clarke County Heritage Room.\nThe content being discussed may not be suitable for all ages and audiences.

SUMMARY:Ramble in the Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Steven Brown and Beth Whitlock will present a program with ramble in the extensive ruins of the Georgia Brick Company on the grounds of the Sandy Creek Nature Center. Tour the ruins with them and see a recently discovered series of 22 photographs from 1911 which show how the factory looked in its prime. These images led to the discovery that a Mrs. Frances Shaw of Chicago may have conned the Athens and Atlanta business communities.
