SUMMARY:Indigenizing Athens
DESCRIPTION:Want to explore 13\,000 years of Georgia history? \nSave the date for May 2\, 2024 as we tour the UGA Archaeology Lab and listen to a lecture from Dr. James F. Brooks on his work on Indigenizing Athens. \nMay is Archaeology Month in Georgia\, and to kick it off the Athens Historical Society is hosting an event on May 2nd with Dr. James F. Brooks at the University of Georgia’s Laboratory of Archaeology. Dr. Brooks\, the Carl and Sally Gable Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia and a board member of our sister institution Historic Athens\, will discuss his ongoing Indigenizing Athens project\, a multi-year collaborative effort developing public interpretive programs with Tribal Nation partners who trace their ancestral past to the Athens-Clarke County area. The Athens Historical Society is very excited to help support this event. A recent Red&Black article on Dr. Brook’s work can be accessed at:\nhttps://www.redandblack.com/uganews/athens-indigenous-past-and-present/article_21fe8ce6-8ed4-11ee-a681-bb5b3608665d.html \nThe event will be held at the University of Georgia’s Laboratory of Archaeology. Established in the fall of 1947\, the Laboratory of Archaeology is the largest archaeological research and collections facility in Georgia. Their mission includes preserving and curating qualified archaeological collections and records\, facilitating research for professionals and training students in archaeology\, and service to the state of Georgia. As part of this event\, the Laboratory of Archaeology will provide a tour of their facility\, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at historical and archaeological research currently being conducted in Georgia. Our hosts will be Drs. Amanda Thompson\, the Operations Director and Institutional NAGPRA coordinator\, and Victor Thompson\, Laboratory Director\, and Distinguished Research Profession with the Department of Anthropology. You can read more about the Laboratory on their website at: https://archaeology.uga.edu/

SUMMARY:UGA New Media Institute Super SLAM Event
DESCRIPTION:As many of you know\, our website recently underwent a timely renovation. Helping us with this project were students enrolled in UGA’s New Media Institute\, which houses the University’s largest certificate program. According to their website\, the New Media Certificate is a credential that demonstrates that a student is “techknowledgable\,” that is\, that he or she understands new media technologies and their applications in a chosen field. The program culminates in New Media Capstone projects–a program under the direction of John Weatherford. As Weatherford explains\, students in his NMIX 4510 class work together\, calling “upon all of the skills gained throughout their certificate journey to develop\, design\, and debut [a project] for a client.” At the end of the semester\, the students participate in SLAM\, a (virtual) day of showcasing their projects and networking with industry guests and program alumni. \nFor the Fall 2020 semester\, one of the New Media Capstone projects was the redesign and renovation of the AHS website. The students are proud to have helped us build a more user-friendly and visually-pleasing website\, and they are happy to invite us to tune into the culmination of their project (as well as the other New Media Capstone projects) on Friday\, December 11th via Zoom. \nYou can RSVP here if you are interested in attending this event.
