DESCRIPTION:Want to explore 13\,000 years of Georgia history? \nSave the date for May 2\, 2024 as we tour the UGA Archaeology Lab and listen to a lecture from Dr. James F. Brooks on his work on Indigenizing Athens. \nMay is Archaeology Month in Georgia\, and to kick it off the Athens Historical Society is hosting an event on May 2nd with Dr. James F. Brooks at the University of Georgia’s Laboratory of Archaeology. Dr. Brooks\, the Carl and Sally Gable Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia and a board member of our sister institution Historic Athens\, will discuss his ongoing Indigenizing Athens project\, a multi-year collaborative effort developing public interpretive programs with Tribal Nation partners who trace their ancestral past to the Athens-Clarke County area. The Athens Historical Society is very excited to help support this event. Established in the fall of 1947\, the Laboratory of Archaeology is the largest archaeological research and collections facility in Georgia. Their mission includes preserving and curating qualified archaeological collections and records\, facilitating research for professionals and training students in archaeology\, and service to the state of Georgia. As part of this event\, the Laboratory of Archaeology will provide a tour of their facility\, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at historical and archaeological research currently being conducted in Georgia. Our hosts will be Drs. Amanda Thompson\, the Operations Director and Institutional NAGPRA coordinator\, and Victor Thompson\, Laboratory Director\, and Distinguished Research Profession with the Department of Anthropology.
